Faceted Ethiopian Opal hand set in sterling silver ring.
Ethiopian opal is relatively new to the market, having first being discovered in Ethiopia in 1994. Now Ethiopia is second only to Australia in the production of opals.
Ethiopian opal normally has a white or transparent base tone, or background colour and very strong ‘play of colour’. (meaning the flashes of blue, green, and other colours that dance across an opal's surface). The biggest difference between Australian opal and Ethiopian opal is the porosity of the opals, Ethiopian opals are very porous, and therefore can absorb moisture and temporarily lose their colour. The colour returns when the stone dries out again but it’s recommended that Ethiopian opals are kept away from water and other chemicals, such as perfume, deodorant etc.
